Fuel economy ratings are determined by performance in both city and highway driving conditions.

There are a few other helpful things to note as you browse. Note that vehicles offered with multiple engine options will have different EPA fuel economy ratings for each engine. As a rule of thumb, smaller engines with less horsepower are more efficient than larger, powerful engines. Any optional installations that add more weight to the vehicle, such as racks and rails for luggage, bikes, kayaks and skis will reduce fuel efficiency. While less available, hybrid and diesel-powered vehicles are more efficient than traditional gasoline vehicles.
