The first decision someone shopping for a new vehicle needs to make is what they’ll need out of their vehicle. This includes total passenger seating, engine performance, storage space and technology features. For example, drivers with large families will find the space and seating available in the average minivan much more accommodating than a midsize sedan.
Finding a Vehicle with Great Fuel Economy
After determining the style of vehicle is right for you, the next step is comparing fuel economy ratings within your chosen segment. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates vehicles by their fuel economy, which can be found online at fueleconomy.gov. Fuel economy ratings are determined by performance in both city and highway driving conditions.
There are a few other helpful things to note as you browse. Note that vehicles offered with multiple engine options will have different EPA fuel economy ratings for each engine. As a rule of thumb, smaller engines with less horsepower are more efficient than larger, powerful engines. Any optional installations that add more weight to the vehicle, such as racks and rails for luggage, bikes, kayaks and skis will reduce fuel efficiency. While less available, hybrid and diesel-powered vehicles are more efficient than traditional gasoline vehicles.
