Do You Want All-Wheel Drive or Front-Wheel Drive?

All-Wheel Drive vs Front-Wheel Drive

There are a lot of decisions you have to make when picking out a used vehicle. Do you want a coupe, sedan, SUV or truck? Do you want something incredibly fuel efficient, or are you more interested in power? What color will it be? And on top of all of those decisions, you have to decide whether you want front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Most people know the answers to the first few questions right away, but deciding between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive can be a little trickier. With that in mind, let’s take a look at all-wheel drive versus front-wheel drive to see which is right for you.

What are the Advantages of Front-Wheel Drive?

Some people might try to tell you the only way to go is all-wheel drive since it’s technically the more advanced system, but front-wheel drive does have its advantages. For one, because it’s the simpler system, it’s easier to maintain and less expensive. It’s also lighter than all-wheel drive, which means you often get better gas mileage. Models with front-wheel drive are also usually more spacious, as there’s no hump in the rear of the vehicle for the transmission tunnel. Front-wheel drive also performs perfectly in dry and rainy conditions, as well as light snow.

What are the Advantages of All-Wheel Drive?

That’s not to say all-wheel drive doesn’t have advantages of its own. Because all-wheel drive means power is going to all of your wheels, you’re going to have better grip when it comes to off-roading and snowy and slippery conditions. So, if you never know what kind of driving conditions or terrain you’ll be facing, you’ll probably want to go with all-wheel drive.
